Harrison EatonMedia Intern On Thursday, February 11th the #5 N.C. State Icepack traveled down to Fort Myers, Florida, to take on the 2 time National Champion Florida Gulf Coast Eagles in a two-game weekend series.
On Friday, February 12th the Icepack opened up the series with a rough start. The Eagles were able to spark fire quickly in the opening period finding the back of the net 3 out of their first 6 shots. After a goalie change, the Icepack went into the intermission down 3-0. In the middle frame, Chris Solomon (#27) was able to break the FGCU shutout to make the score 3-1. The Eagles later punched in 2 more to take their lead to 5-1 heading into the locker room, eventually winning by that same score. Game 2 which was the second game in back-to-back nights was a different story. The Icepack broke the 0-0 tie quickly with a goal from Chris Solomon who was sprung on a breakaway by Garrett Auriene to make the score 1-0. The Icepack went into the break with a one-goal lead and carried that momentum into the 2nd period where Riley Johnson (#11) was able to slip it past the FGCU goaltender to make it 2-0 off a feed from Solomon. A tough and gritty defensive effort from the opposition and take down the 2-time national champions 2-1, splitting the weekend series 1-1. “It took a lot of grit and determination to bring that game home” said Icepack Head Coach Tim Healy. The Icepack head back to North Carolina with a 7-4-1 record and also got the week off to rest up for the ACCHL semester opener against Coastal Carolina on 2/26 and 2/27 at home.
