Jake Gifford opened the scoring less than two minutes into the first period off a faceoff, assisted by Daniel Prazma and Zach Herman. After West Virginia tied the game, Cam Smith netted his first Icepack goal to regain the lead, assisted by Austin Finch. Prazma added a third NC State goal with less than a minute remaining in the period, assisted by Erik Dahlin and Herman, giving the Icepack a 3-1 lead heading into the first intermission.

NC State started the second period with a power play and extended its lead shortly after its man advantage ended. Ian Buckley scored his first Icepack career goal to put NC State up 4-1 off of assists from Joey Gouveia and Jack Ammons.

Prazma scored his second goal of the game early in the third period, assisted by Gifford – his third point of the day – and Mason Payne. West Virginia responded with their third goal of the game on a power play to cut the deficit to one, but NC State held on for a 5-4 victory.

The Icepack left West Virginia with two wins, strong play from goaltender Pieter Bartelse, and the first career goals for Smith, Buckley, and Gian Khani. Goaltender Isaac Tawyer, NC State’s all-time leader in saves and wins, added to both milestones after Friday night’s game.

NC State returns to action next weekend with a home-and-home series against UNC. The Icepack plays Friday at Invisalign Arena and Saturday at First Horizon Coliseum, home of the Greensboro Gargoyles.

RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State heads to West Virginia this weekend for a two-game series against the Mountaineers.

The Icepack is coming off its first weekend off of the season after starting its road stretch by splitting a two-game series with Delaware.

Through the first portion of the season, NC State holds a 6-2-1 record. The latest American Collegiate Hockey Association rankings, released Oct. 15, did not place the Icepack in the top 25, but the team did receive a vote — a sign of its strong start.

Freshman forward Aidan Raedy said he enjoyed the atmosphere of the team’s first road trip and is looking forward to another weekend on the road. “It’ll be a fun road trip. The last road trip was fun, too,” Ready said. “Everybody hangs out with each other. It’s very exciting.”

Raedy said the Icepack will focus on playing its own game against a West Virginia team that has been inconsistent so far this season. “It seems like they’re really inconsistent,” Raedy said. “I saw their game against Navy. You just don’t really know what to expect from them.”

West Virginia enters the series with a 4-4-1 record after splitting a weekend series with Lehigh University. The Mountaineers have split two of their five series this season. NC State and West Virginia have not faced a common opponent this season.

The Icepack plays at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Hope Gas Ice Pavilion at Mylan Park. Both games will be streamed on the Mountaineer Hockey Network on YouTube.

NEWARK, Del. – NC State fell 5-1 to Delaware on Sunday in the second game of a weekend series, splitting the trip 1-1 against the Blue Hens.

BOX SCORE | PLAYER STATS

Delaware opened the scoring, but Daniel Prazma responded quickly on the power play off an assist from alternate captain Nick Librizzi. The teams went into the first intermission tied at 1.

The Icepack couldn’t find its footing in the second period, as Delaware scored three unanswered goals to take a 4-1 lead.

Goaltender Pieter Bartelse took over in the third period after fellow goaltender Ethan Roberts faced 34 shots in the first two. In a penalty-heavy game for both sides, NC State’s penalty kill kept Delaware’s power play off the board. The Blue Hens added one more goal in the third to seal a 5-1 win.

The Icepack has its first weekend off since the start of the season next weekend before traveling to Morgantown, W.Va., the following weekend.

The Icepack’s first overnight road trip of the season began with a scoreless first period despite several power-play opportunities for both teams.

Delaware scored the first goal of the night 5:38 into the second period, but NC State evened the score on a power-play goal from Aidan Raedy, assisted by Holden Koufman, with 23 seconds left in the period.

The Blue Hens regained the lead early in the third, but Koufman responded with his first goal of the season – and second point of the night – off an assist from Jake Gifford. Mason Payne added his first point for the Icepack on a quick shot set up by Reece Johnson and alternate captain Joey Gouveia.

Jack Ammons sealed the win with an empty-net goal on the power play with 28 seconds remaining, his second of the season.

Goaltender Ethan Roberts was a steady presence in the net, stopping 38 of 40 shots. NC State also killed all six of Delaware’s power plays.

The Icepack and Blue Hens play again on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Gold Ice Arena to close out the series.
